Broadbeach Beach — The Complete Local Guide
Kurrawa Beach is one of Queensland’s best patrolled beaches. Here’s everything you need to know before you go.

The beach is the reason Broadbeach exists. Everything else — the restaurants, the casino, the shopping centre — grew up around it. And after living here for years, I still find myself walking down to Kurrawa Beach at least once a week, usually in the early morning before the day gets busy.
Broadbeach’s beach is formally known as Kurrawa Beach, and it’s one of the Gold Coast’s consistently top-ranked patrolled beaches. It’s wide, it’s golden, and compared to Surfers Paradise just 4km north, it’s noticeably less crowded — even during peak school holiday season.
This guide covers everything a visitor needs: the best entry points, surf conditions by season, the safest spots for kids, what to bring, and the local knowledge that makes the difference between a good beach day and a great one.

Where to Enter the Beach
Broadbeach beach is accessible from several points along Surf Parade and The Esplanade.
**Kurrawa Beach main access (Surf Parade near Gold Coast Highway):** The primary access point, close to Kurrawa Surf Club, public toilets, outdoor showers, and the Kurrawa Park playground. This is where the lifesaving patrol is based and where the flags are set. Best choice for families and first-time visitors.
**Oasis Shopping Centre beachside exit:** Walk through Oasis on Surf Parade and out the eastern exit directly to the beach. This is the most convenient access if you’re parking at Oasis.
**Southern end (near The Esplanade):** Quieter section, slightly less patrolled. Good for a morning walk or if you prefer a less populated stretch. The northern end of Broadbeach beach blends into the southern end of Surfers Paradise beach — there’s no physical barrier, just a continuous stretch of sand.
Swimming Safety
Broadbeach is a patrolled beach — Surf Life Saving volunteers and paid lifeguards operate year-round, not just in summer. This makes it one of the safest swimming beaches on the Gold Coast.
The rules that apply everywhere on Australian beaches apply here:
– **Always swim between the red and yellow flags.** The flags are moved daily based on where the rip currents are running. The section between the flags is actively monitored.
– **If you get caught in a rip:** don’t fight it. Float, conserve energy, and raise your arm to signal for help. Surf lifesavers will reach you.
– **Never swim at night** or when the beach is unpatrolled without checking conditions.
The Broadbeach surf can produce strong rip currents, particularly after storms or during periods of large swell. The flags will be set well clear of any active rips — trust the placement.
Surfing at Broadbeach
Broadbeach produces consistent beach break waves suitable for intermediate to experienced surfers. The sandbars shift seasonally, so the best peaks move around — locals know to walk the beach and find the best bank rather than surfing the same spot every session.
Best conditions: offshore winds (westerly/south-westerly), 1–2m swell from the east or south-east. Autumn and winter tend to deliver cleaner, more consistent surf than summer’s more wind-affected conditions.
Beginner surfers are better starting at a dedicated surf school — the Broadbeach area has a few operating along the Gold Coast coast. The peaks at Broadbeach can get powerful and the crowds in the lineup during good conditions include experienced surfers who know their right of way.
Surf shops and board hire are available within 10 minutes of the beach — several operators along the Gold Coast Highway offer hourly board hire.
Kurrawa Park — The Beach Playground
Directly adjacent to Kurrawa Beach access is Kurrawa Park — one of Queensland’s best beachside public parks. The all-abilities playground is a Gold Coast standout, with extensive equipment suitable for toddlers through to teenagers. Facilities include:
– All-abilities playground with accessible equipment
– BBQ facilities (free electric BBQs, first come first served)
– Sheltered picnic tables
– Outdoor gym equipment
– Public toilets and outdoor showers
– Kurrawa Surf Club café nearby
On weekend mornings, Kurrawa Park is busy with local families. Arrive by 9am on summer weekends to secure a BBQ spot. The park is directly connected to the beach — kids can move between the playground and sand freely.
Beach Tips from a Local
Early morning gives you the beach almost entirely to yourself — the water is beautiful, the light is golden, and the heat hasn’t built yet. Late afternoon is when locals swim — the day-tripper crowds have thinned and the water stays warm from a day of sun. Mid-day in summer (11am–2pm) is hot and crowded.
The UV index in Broadbeach regularly exceeds 11 (extreme) on clear summer days. Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen 20 minutes before reaching the beach, reapply every 90 minutes, and cover kids particularly carefully. A rash vest is standard kit for children in Queensland.
Oasis Shopping Centre (Surf Parade) has direct beach access and 3 hours free parking — the easiest combination for a beach morning. The small beachside carpark on The Esplanade fills by 9am on summer weekends. Don’t waste time circling for beachfront street parking.
Bluebottle jellyfish (Portuguese Man o’ War) occasionally wash in on north-easterly winds, usually in summer. Check the flags — lifeguards will post bluebottle warnings when they’re present. Stingrays are common in the shallows; shuffle your feet when wading in sandy sections to avoid surprising one.
Several surf schools operate on or near Broadbeach. Group lessons for beginners typically run 1.5–2 hours and include board hire. Book ahead in school holidays — lessons fill up fast in peak season.
