Pet-Friendly Broadbeach

Dog beaches, off-leash parks, pet-friendly cafes, and where to stay with your furry friend.

Pet-Friendly Broadbeach

Bringing your dog to Broadbeach? You’re in luck – the Gold Coast is one of Australia’s most dog-friendly destinations, and Broadbeach has several off-leash areas, pet-friendly cafes, and accommodation options that welcome four-legged guests.

Gold Coast City Council maintains designated off-leash dog exercise areas on the beach and in parks, with clear time-based rules. Understanding these rules means your dog can enjoy the sand and surf legally – and you can avoid the fines.

This guide covers everything dog owners need to know: where to walk, where to eat, where to stay, and the rules that keep everyone (dogs and humans) happy.

Quick Reference

  • No dogs on Broadbeach beach – nearest off-leash beaches: The Spit (Main Beach) and Palm Beach north of Tallebudgera Creek
  • Off-leash park: Kurrawa Park has a designated dog area
  • Pet-friendly cafes: several along Albert Avenue and the beach strip
  • Pet-friendly accommodation: select apartments and Airbnbs allow dogs
  • Always carry bags and clean up – fines apply for not picking up

Dog Beach Rules at Broadbeach

The short version: dogs are not allowed on Broadbeach beach. The beach at Broadbeach (including the Kurrawa and Old Burleigh Road sections) is a patrolled bathing reserve, and City of Gold Coast rules prohibit dogs on patrolled beaches at all times – on-leash or off. There is no timed morning or evening window here.

The good news is that two of the Gold Coast’s designated off-leash dog beaches are a short drive away:

The Spit, Main Beach (10-15 min north): The ocean beach north of the Sheraton Mirage up to the Seaway is the city’s biggest 24-hour off-leash beach zone. Plenty of space, and dogs can swim.

Palm Beach, north of Tallebudgera Creek (15 min south): A 24-hour off-leash beach on the northern side of the creek mouth. The creek side gives calmer water for dogs that are new to swimming.

Fines: Council rangers patrol regularly. Taking a dog onto a prohibited beach is an offence under the city’s animal management local law, with on-the-spot fines in the hundreds of dollars and court maximums well beyond that. Signage at each beach access point shows the current rules – check it before you walk down.

Off-Leash Dog Parks Near Broadbeach

Fenced dog parks: City of Gold Coast runs a network of designated dog exercise areas across the city, several within a 10-15 minute drive of Broadbeach. Check the council’s dog exercise area map (search “City of Gold Coast dog exercise areas”) for the current list, as designations change from time to time.

Schuster Park, Tallebudgera (20 min south): A beautiful riverside off-leash park. Dogs can swim in the creek (calm, safe water), and the park is spacious with plenty of shade. A local favourite.

The Spit, Main Beach (10-15 min north): As well as the off-leash beach, the parkland at Doug Jennings Park gives dogs room to run on grass before or after a swim.

Pet-Friendly Cafes and Dining

Several Broadbeach cafes welcome dogs at their outdoor tables:

Elk Espresso – dog-friendly outdoor seating, water bowls provided. Great coffee and breakfast.
The Rind – outdoor tables welcome dogs, close to the beach for a post-walk coffee
Bam Bam Bakehouse – outdoor seating, dogs welcome
Various Albert Avenue cafes – most with outdoor seating will accommodate dogs on a leash

Rule of thumb: If a cafe has outdoor pavement seating, dogs on leashes are generally welcome. Always check with staff first, and keep your dog on a short leash away from other diners.

Water: Carry a collapsible water bowl. While some cafes provide dog bowls, not all do, and your dog will need water after a beach walk in the Queensland heat.

Pet-Friendly Accommodation

Most Broadbeach hotels and managed apartments do NOT allow pets. However, there are options:

Airbnb / Stayz – filter for ‘pets allowed’. Several private apartment owners in Broadbeach accept dogs, usually with a cleaning surcharge ($50–100). Book early as pet-friendly listings are limited.
Pet-friendly holiday houses – the Gold Coast hinterland (20–30 min drive) has more pet-friendly holiday houses. You can base there and drive to Broadbeach for beach days.

Before booking: Always confirm the specific pet policy directly with the host. Ask about size restrictions, whether the dog can be left unattended in the apartment, and whether there are any breed restrictions.

Tip: Bring your dog’s bed, food, bowls, and familiar toys. A dog that’s comfortable in unfamiliar accommodation is a quieter, happier travel companion.

Vet and Emergency Contacts

Know where to go if your pet needs medical attention:

Gold Coast Veterinary Surgery (Mermaid Beach) – 5 min south, general vet
Animal Emergency Service (Carrara) – 24/7 emergency vet, 15 min drive west. This is the after-hours emergency option.
Pet Barn / PETstock (Robina) – pet supplies, 10 min drive

Bring any medications your dog is currently taking, along with vaccination records (some boarding facilities and dog parks may request proof of vaccination).

Tips for Travelling with Dogs to Broadbeach

🐕

Go early to the dog beaches Hit The Spit or Palm Beach before 9am – parking is easier, the sand is cool on paws, and summer heat builds fast. Broadbeach beach itself is off limits to dogs, so plan the drive into your morning.

💧

Carry water – always

Queensland heat dehydrates dogs quickly. Bring a collapsible bowl and a water bottle. Rinse your dog with fresh water after swimming in the ocean – salt water can irritate their skin.

🚫

Never leave your dog in the car

Gold Coast car temperatures can exceed 60°C in summer within minutes. Never leave your dog in a parked car, even with windows cracked. It’s illegal and potentially fatal.

🧹

Always carry bags and clean up

Bag dispensers are available at most beach access points, but don’t rely on them being stocked. Carry your own bags. Fines for not cleaning up are significant.
