Broadbeach Surf Report & Conditions

How to read Broadbeach surf, the best swell windows, and where to check live conditions before you paddle out.

Broadbeach Surf Report & Conditions

Broadbeach and Kurrawa Beach are sandy-bottomed beach breaks that respond well to southerly and east-southeasterly swells. The breaks aren’t as consistent or as quality as nearby Burleigh Heads or Currumbin, but they’re accessible, forgiving, and good enough to provide fun waves on the right day — particularly for intermediate surfers and beginners.

Here’s how to read Broadbeach surf conditions and find the best windows.

Broadbeach Surf Conditions

  • Break type: sandy beach break — forgiving, no reef hazard
  • Best swell direction: south to east-southeast, 1–1.8m
  • Best wind: early morning offshore (W to SW) before sea breeze develops
  • Best season: autumn (March–June) — consistent southerly swells, offshore mornings
  • Live forecast: Swellnet and Windguru are the most accurate for Gold Coast surf

How to Check Broadbeach Surf Conditions

Swellnet (swellnet.com) is the most widely used and accurate surf forecast service for the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast surf report on Swellnet covers Broadbeach, Kurrawa, and the broader Gold Coast breaks with detailed swell, wind, and tide forecasting. The 3-day forecast is reliable; the 7-day is directionally useful.

Windguru (windguru.cz) is the most accurate wind forecasting tool — critical for Gold Coast surfing, where the difference between morning offshore and midday onshore determines whether you’re surfing clean waves or choppy rubbish. Set the location to Gold Coast Broadbeach.

Coastalwatch has a surf camera at several Gold Coast beaches — check the live cam rather than just the forecast on days where conditions look borderline. What the camera shows is what you’ll get.

Magic Seaweed and Surfline are international alternatives that cover Gold Coast adequately but with less granularity than Swellnet for the specific break behaviour at Broadbeach.

Broadbeach Break Characteristics

Broadbeach peak: The main Broadbeach break sits in front of the lifeguard tower and is a consistent shore break that handles a range of conditions. On solid south swells it produces proper beach break waves — hollow sections at low tide, more workable at mid tide. The sand shifts seasonally, which changes where the best peaks form.

Kurrawa Beach: The section of beach south of the main Broadbeach break (running toward Mermaid Beach) often has quieter peaks away from the main crowds. Worth walking south 200–300m if the primary break is crowded.

Nearby upgrades: If Broadbeach is flat or onshore, the Gold Coast has significantly better options within 20–30 minutes:
Burleigh Heads (10 min south) — the Gold Coast’s best high-performance break, works on southerly swell with rock bottom character
Currumbin Alley (20 min south) — right-hand point break, works on SE to E swell, excellent for longboards
Snapper Rocks/Superbank (30 min south, Coolangatta) — world-famous right-hand sand point, works on strong SE swell

Surf Tips for Broadbeach

Surf at dawn for the best conditions

The Gold Coast sea breeze (NE to E) typically kicks in between 9–11am and turns the surf choppy and messy. Dawn — 5:30–8:30am — is when the wind is lightest or offshore (W to SW). If you check the forecast and see favourable conditions, get in the water at first light. The surf is cleaner, the crowds are thin, and the light is extraordinary.

🏄

Broadbeach is best for beginners and intermediates

Broadbeach beach break is forgiving — sandy bottom, no reef, and beach lifeguards from 8am–5pm. It’s well-suited to learners and intermediate surfers. If you’re an experienced surfer chasing performance waves, drive 10 minutes south to Burleigh Heads or further to Coolangatta for better quality breaks.

🌊

Don’t surf the cyclone swell

During cyclone season (November–April), tropical systems off the Queensland coast can generate large, disorganised swell that closes out the beach break and creates rips. If the forecast shows 2m+ easterly swell with short period (under 10 seconds), the surf will be messy and dangerous. Check the BOM beach hazard advisory before paddling out on big days.

🚩

Don’t surf inside the swimming flags

The lifeguarded swimming area at Broadbeach and Kurrawa is flagged and patrolled from 8am–5pm. Surfing inside the flags is prohibited — paddle out beyond or to the sides of the patrolled swimming zone. Lifeguards will call you in. The surf zone is clearly delineated in practice and locals respect the boundary.
