Dreamworld vs Movie World
If you only have one theme park day, this is the decision. They are run by different companies, sold on different tickets, and they are not trying to be the same thing.
Dreamworld and Movie World are the Gold Coast’s two big thrill parks, and most visitors staying in Broadbeach end up choosing one rather than doing both. The choice is easier than it looks once you know three things: they are owned by rival companies so no single pass covers both, Movie World is the closer of the two from Broadbeach, and they are built around genuinely different ideas. This page sets out which suits which kind of group.
The Short Answer
- Movie World for thrill rides and a film-studio theme. Home of DC Rivals HyperCoaster.
- Dreamworld for range - big rides plus a wildlife section, which works better for mixed-age groups.
- Different owners: Movie World is Village Roadshow, Dreamworld is Ardent Leisure. No pass covers both.
- From Broadbeach, Movie World is 24.1 km (24 min) and Dreamworld is 29.7 km (29 min).
- Each has a water park next door - Wet’n’Wild by Movie World, WhiteWater World by Dreamworld.
| Movie World | Dreamworld | |

| On the multi-park pass | Yes | No - separate ticket |
| Best for | Teens, adults, coaster fans | Mixed ages, families splitting up |
They Are Not Sold on the Same Ticket
This is the part that catches people out, so it is worth stating plainly before anything else. Warner Bros. Movie World is a Village Roadshow park. Dreamworld is run by Ardent Leisure. They are competitors.
That means the Village Roadshow multi-park pass - the one that bundles Movie World, Sea World and Wet’n’Wild - does not get you into Dreamworld. Not at a discount, not at all. Dreamworld sells its own tickets and its own passes, usually bundled with WhiteWater World next door.
If you want both parks, you are buying two separate things. Work out whether you genuinely want both before you spend, because two full theme park days in one trip is more than most groups manage.
Movie World: Built for the Coaster Crowd
Movie World’s pitch is thrill rides wrapped in a film-studio theme, and its headline attraction is DC Rivals HyperCoaster - the longest and fastest hypercoaster in the Southern Hemisphere at 1.1 km of track, reaching 115 km/h.
That tells you who the park is for. If your group is teenagers and adults who came to be thrown around, Movie World is the stronger day. The character parades, stunt shows and studio theming give the park a coherent identity that Dreamworld does not really attempt.
The flip side is that a park built around big coasters has less for anyone too small, too nervous or too old for them. Groups with a wide age spread can find themselves splitting up and waiting around.
It is also the closer of the two from Broadbeach at 24.1 km, and it shares Exit 54 and a car park precinct with Wet’n’Wild, which makes the two easy to combine across a trip.
Get there for opening and go straight to the hypercoaster. Queues on the flagship ride build to well over an hour by the middle of the day.
Big rides go down for maintenance, sometimes for weeks. If one specific coaster is the reason for the trip, confirm it is operating rather than assuming.
Dreamworld: Range Rather Than Focus
Dreamworld’s advantage is breadth. It carries serious thrill rides, but it also has a wildlife section including Tiger Island, and a spread of gentler attractions that gives a mixed-age group somewhere to be at the same time.
For a family with, say, a fifteen-year-old and a five-year-old, that matters more than any individual ride. Everyone finds something, and you are less likely to spend the day dividing the adults between queues.
WhiteWater World sits next door under the same ownership, which makes a two-park combination straightforward if the weather is hot and you want a water day attached.
The costs are distance and the ticket. At 29.7 km it is the furthest of the major parks from Broadbeach, about 29 minutes up the M1 to Exit 57, and it needs its own ticket outside any Village Roadshow pass you may already hold.
If you are choosing between the two parks and there are young children in the group, this is usually what settles it.
Dreamworld’s own combination tickets with the adjoining water park are where its value sits. Compare that bundle rather than a single-day gate price.
Choosing, If You Only Get One Day
Pick Movie World if the group is mostly teenagers and adults, if roller coasters are the point, or if you already hold a Village Roadshow multi-park pass. It is also the shorter drive from Broadbeach, which is worth something at the end of a long day.
Pick Dreamworld if your group spans a wide age range, if wildlife is a genuine draw, or if you want a water park attached to the same ticket without a second company’s pass.
Do both only if you have a week or more and everyone actually wants it. Two theme park days plus travel is a significant chunk of a Gold Coast holiday, and the Broadbeach beach is 24 km closer than either of them.
And if neither is quite right, Sea World is 8.9 km from Broadbeach - by far the closest major park - and works for a half day in a way that neither of these two does.
Frequently Asked Questions
Neither is better outright - they suit different groups. Movie World is the stronger choice for teenagers and adults who want thrill rides, and it has DC Rivals HyperCoaster, the longest and fastest hypercoaster in the Southern Hemisphere. Dreamworld suits mixed-age families better because it pairs big rides with a wildlife section, so a wide age range can stay together.
No. Movie World is operated by Village Roadshow and Dreamworld by Ardent Leisure - competing companies. The Village Roadshow multi-park pass covers Movie World, Sea World and Wet’n’Wild but never Dreamworld. Visiting both means buying two separate tickets.
They are both in the northern Gold Coast but at different motorway exits - Movie World at Oxenford off Exit 54, Dreamworld at Coomera off Exit 57. From Broadbeach, Movie World is 24.1 km and about 24 minutes, and Dreamworld is 29.7 km and about 29 minutes. Distances measured by road on 29 August 2026.
Movie World, by 5.6 km. It is 24.1 km from Broadbeach against Dreamworld’s 29.7 km, and about five minutes closer in driving time. Both are north on the Pacific Motorway. Sea World is closer than either at 8.9 km.
You could physically drive between them, but it is a poor idea. Each park is a full day, they need separate tickets from competing companies, and you would spend the middle of the day in the car and the queues twice over. If you want two parks in one day, Movie World and Wet’n’Wild share a car park precinct and one ticket system.
Compare Tickets for Both Parks
Movie World sits on the Village Roadshow multi-park pass. Dreamworld is ticketed separately, usually bundled with WhiteWater World. Check current prices for whichever you are leaning towards.
