Noosa is Queensland’s most desirable coastal town, and from Broadbeach it’s a 2-hour drive up the Bruce Highway and through Sunshine Coast hinterland. How to Get from Broadbeach to Noosa
Driving is the only practical option. From Broadbeach, take the M1 Pacific Motorway north through Brisbane and continue on the Bruce Highway (A1) to the Sunshine Coast. Exit at Noosaville/Noosa and follow signs to Noosa Heads and Hastings Street. The drive takes 2–2.5 hours in normal conditions; add 30–45 minutes during Brisbane peak hour if you’re travelling on a weekday morning.
Tolls: The M1 through Brisbane has tolls — use a Linkt account or tag, or pay online at Linkt.com.au within 3 days of travel. Total tolls Broadbeach to Noosa are approximately $5–10 depending on route.
Parking at Noosa: Noosa Main Beach and Hastings Street have parking metres and council car parks — free time limits apply. During peak season (school holidays, Christmas), Noosa parking is extremely limited. Consider parking at Noosaville and taking a short bus or Uber to the main beach area.
Is Noosa a practical day trip from Broadbeach? Technically yes — but the 4–5 hours of total driving makes for a long and tiring day. If you’re going to Noosa, stay at least one night. The combination of the national park walk, an afternoon at the beach, and a Hastings Street dinner is far better spread over 2 days than compressed into one.
What to Do in Noosa
Noosa National Park: The headland national park is accessible from the eastern end of Hastings Street. The main coastal walk (2.7km one way to Hell’s Gates) passes through littoral rainforest with cliff-top ocean views and regular koala sightings. One of Queensland’s best short walks — allow 2–3 hours return.
Hastings Street: Noosa’s main restaurant and boutique shopping strip. The standard of dining is high — Noosa has more per-capita quality restaurants than most places its size in Queensland. Reserve a Hastings Street dinner table in advance during school holidays.
Noosa Main Beach: Protected from southerly swells by the headland, Noosa Main Beach is calmer and gentler than Gold Coast beaches. Good for swimming and small waves for beginning surfers. The beach is backed by the national park on the eastern end — beautiful setting.
Noosa Everglades: The Noosa Everglades are a unique coastal lake and river system accessible from Noosa — boat tours, kayaking, and camping. One of Australia’s most underrated natural attractions. Half-day tours depart from Noosa’s Gympie Terrace.
Noosaville and Gympie Terrace: The riverside strip at Noosaville (5 min from Noosa Heads) has a more relaxed, residential feel — good restaurants, kayak hire, and the main boat ramp for Everglades tours. Less crowded than Hastings Street.
Broadbeach to Noosa Tips
The drive from Broadbeach to Noosa is 2–2.5 hours each way. A day trip forces you to rush everything and spend 5 hours of your day in the car. One night transforms the trip — you get the afternoon for the national park walk, the evening for Hastings Street dinner, and the morning for a beach swim before driving back.
If you leave Broadbeach before 7am, you’ll pass through Brisbane before peak hour and arrive in Noosa by 9–9:30am. If you leave after 7:30am on a weekday, add 45–60 minutes to the Brisbane section. Weekends are less affected by commuter traffic.
Noosa National Park has one of the most reliably sighted koala populations accessible to the public in Queensland. Walk slowly, look up into the forks of the taller eucalyptus trees, and the park rangers can point you to recent sighting locations. The main circuit near the car park entrance is the most productive stretch.
The better Hastings Street restaurants — Noosa Boathouse, Sails Restaurant, and several others — book out weeks ahead during school holidays and Christmas/New Year. If you’re planning to eat well in Noosa, book before you arrive. Walk-in options exist but the queue for the best tables is genuine.
