Broadbeach to Mount Tamborine — Distance, Drive Time & Day Trip Guide

45 minutes from Broadbeach: rainforest walks, Gold Coast hinterland wineries, gallery walks and spectacular escarpment views.

Broadbeach to Mount Tamborine

Mount Tamborine is the most popular Gold Coast hinterland day trip — and with good reason. In under an hour from Broadbeach you go from beach suburb to rainforest escarpment, with sweeping views back over the Gold Coast strip, a charming gallery walk with local food and wine, and some of southeast Queensland’s best rainforest.

It’s the perfect contrast to a beach holiday: cool, green, quiet, and genuinely beautiful. Here’s everything you need to know.

How to Get from Broadbeach to Mount Tamborine

Driving is by far the best option. Take the M1 Pacific Motorway north to the Oxenford/Tamborine exit, then follow Tamborine Mountain Road up the escarpment. The road winds steeply — allow about 20 minutes from the bottom of the mountain to the village. Parking in Gallery Walk (North Tamborine) is free on most streets and easy on weekdays.

Hiring a car: Several car hire operators are based near Gold Coast Airport (20 min from Broadbeach) and in Surfers Paradise. A day hire of a small car runs $50–80. Given the lack of practical public transport to the mountain, a hire car is the recommended approach for visitors without their own vehicle.

Organised tours: Several Gold Coast operators run day tours to Mount Tamborine — typically including stops at multiple wineries, the Gallery Walk, and rainforest walks. These run $80–120pp and include transport from the Gold Coast. A good option if you don’t want to drive and plan to taste wines.

What to Do on Mount Tamborine

Gallery Walk (North Tamborine): The main village strip is a kilometre of galleries, cafes, providores, fudge shops, wine tastings, and local artisan stores. Plan 2–3 hours to browse properly. The food is genuinely good — local honey, cheeses, preserves, handmade chocolates — and several cafes offer excellent lunches.

Tamborine Mountain Winery: The Gold Coast hinterland has several wineries on the plateau. Tamborine Mountain Winery is the most established — tastings available, cellar door sales, and vineyard views. Apple and tropical fruit wines are regional specialties alongside the standard grape varietals.

Rainforest walks — Tamborine National Park: Several sections of Tamborine National Park are accessible from the village. Cedar Creek Falls and Witches Falls are the most popular short walks (1–2 hours return). Palm Grove Circuit is spectacular — ancient rainforest palms and creek crossings.

Thunderbird Park: A family activity park with fossicking, an aerial walkway, and accommodation. Good for families with kids wanting something active.

Escarpment views: Several lookout points along the escarpment give panoramic views back over the Gold Coast strip and Broadbeach — on clear days you can see all the way to the Surfers Paradise skyline and the ocean. The best views are from Tamborine Mountain Road on the way up and from the lookout near Curtis Falls.

Tips for a Day Trip to Mount Tamborine

🚗

Go on a weekday

Weekends — especially Sunday — bring large crowds to Gallery Walk. Parking becomes difficult and the cafes queue. A Tuesday or Wednesday visit gives you the whole place to yourself, better service, and a far more relaxed experience.

🌧️

Tamborine is cooler and wetter than the coast

Mount Tamborine averages 5–8°C cooler than Broadbeach and receives significantly more rain. Even in summer, bring a light jacket. In winter (June–August), bring a proper layer — it can feel genuinely cold at 700m altitude, especially in the morning.

🍷

Designate a driver for the wineries

If you plan to do wine tastings, decide in advance who’s driving back. The road down from the mountain is narrow and winding — not one to drive impaired. Alternatively, book an organised tour that handles the transport.

🥾

Wear proper shoes for rainforest walks

The rainforest walk tracks can be muddy after rain and have uneven surfaces. Thongs (flip-flops) are not appropriate. Closed shoes or trail runners are the right choice for any of the national park walks.
