Where to Stay on the Gold Coast
Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise or Burleigh Heads? An honest guide to picking the right base for your trip and your travel style.

The single biggest decision on a Gold Coast trip isn’t which hotel - it’s which suburb to base yourself in. Get it right and everything is a short walk or a 50-cent tram ride away; get it wrong and you’ll spend the holiday commuting.
Three suburbs dominate the choice, and they’re genuinely different holidays. Broadbeach is the balanced, central all-rounder. Surfers Paradise is the high-energy, budget-friendly party strip. Burleigh Heads is the laid-back, foodie, natural-beauty pick.
We’re a Broadbeach guide, so fair warning: we think it’s the best all-round base for most people - and we’ll explain exactly why. But we’ll also tell you honestly when Surfers or Burleigh is the smarter call. Here’s how to choose.
The Quick Answer
- Best all-rounder / first-timers / families: Broadbeach - central, calm beach, best dining, walkable
- Best for nightlife, budget and energy: Surfers Paradise - clubs, cheaper rooms, iconic but busy beach
- Best for foodies, couples and nature: Burleigh Heads - James St dining, headland walks, world-class surf
- All three are 8-20 min apart on the G:link tram (flat 50c fares), so you can base in one and visit the others
- Broadbeach sits in the middle - the easiest place to reach everything from
- Rough nightly rates: Surfers cheapest, Broadbeach mid, Burleigh limited and often pricier

| Getting around | Central - tram + walkable | Tram + walkable, very busy | Southern end - car helps |
Broadbeach: The Best All-Round Base
Broadbeach is the choice we recommend for most visitors, and the reason is balance. It has the best dining on the coast (the Oracle Boulevard and Surf Parade strip plus The Star’s restaurants), a wide calm patrolled beach that’s noticeably less crowded than Surfers, Pacific Fair for shopping, and a compact, walkable layout where you genuinely don’t need a car.
It also sits in the geographic middle of the coast. The G:link tram puts Surfers Paradise 8 minutes north and connects south toward Burleigh, so basing in Broadbeach means you can dip into the other suburbs without committing your whole trip to either.
Accommodation spans every price point - 5-star hotels, premium apartment resorts, mid-market serviced apartments and budget options. It’s the safe, high-quality default for first-timers, families and couples who want a bit of everything.
Choose Broadbeach if: it’s your first Gold Coast trip, you’re travelling with family, you want the best food, or you simply want the most flexible, central base.
If you can’t decide, Broadbeach is the lowest-risk choice. It does almost everything well and it’s the easiest base to reach the rest of the coast from.
Surfers Paradise: Energy and Value
Surfers Paradise is the Gold Coast of the postcards - the high-rise skyline, the iconic beach, Cavill Avenue, and the coast’s biggest nightlife. If your trip is about energy, going out, and stretching your budget, this is your base.
It’s typically the cheapest of the three for accommodation, with a huge volume of rooms keeping prices competitive. The trade-offs are real, though: the beach and streets get genuinely crowded and loud in peak season, and a lot of the dining is tourist-focused rather than destination-quality.
Choose Surfers Paradise if: you want nightlife and clubs, you’re travelling as a group of friends or for schoolies-style energy, you’re on a tighter budget, or you specifically want to be in the middle of the buzz. If you want to be near the action but sleep somewhere calmer, Broadbeach is a 50-cent tram ride south.
A popular move: base in calmer Broadbeach and tram up to Surfers for a big night. You get the nightlife on demand and a quiet bed to come back to.
Burleigh Heads: Chilled and Foodie
Burleigh Heads is the coast’s cool, laid-back favourite - and the suburb experienced travellers increasingly pick over the bigger centres. It has the Gold Coast’s best cafe and dining scene along James Street, a beautiful beach framed by the Burleigh headland, a national park walking circuit, and the world-famous Burleigh Point surf break.
The catch is accommodation. Burleigh has far fewer hotels and apartment towers than Broadbeach or Surfers, the options skew boutique, and rates can run higher for less choice - so it pays to book early. A car is also more useful here, as it sits at the southern end of the tram-served strip.
Choose Burleigh Heads if: you’re a foodie, a couple after a relaxed boutique stay, a surfer, or someone who values natural beauty and a slower pace over big-resort convenience. For a livelier base with more accommodation that’s still an easy trip to Burleigh, Broadbeach is the practical middle ground.
If Burleigh’s accommodation is booked out or over budget, base in Broadbeach and visit for a James St lunch and a headland walk - it’s a short hop south.
Match the Base to Your Trip
Here’s the decision boiled down by traveller type:
First-time visitors: Broadbeach - the best all-rounder and the easiest base to explore the whole coast from.
Families: Broadbeach - calm patrolled beach, walkable, apartment options with kitchens and pools.
Couples (romantic / relaxed): Burleigh for boutique-and-foodie; Broadbeach for central-and-polished with a 5-star option.
Groups and nightlife: Surfers Paradise for clubs and value, or Broadbeach for a more grown-up bar scene with The Star.
Budget travellers: Surfers Paradise has the cheapest rooms; Broadbeach has budget options a notch up in calm and quality.
Foodies: Burleigh (James St) edges it, with Broadbeach a very close second on sheer range.
Business / conferences (GCCEC): Broadbeach - the convention centre is here, walkable from several hotels.
Whatever you pick, remember the three are tram-linked and close. The base sets the tone of your trip, not its limits.
All three suburbs sit on the G:link tram at a flat 50 cents a trip. Wherever you base, the other two are an easy, cheap visit - so choose for where you’ll sleep and eat most.
Frequently Asked Questions
For most visitors, Broadbeach is the best all-round base - it’s central, has the best dining, a calm patrolled beach, Pacific Fair shopping, and a walkable layout, with accommodation at every price point. Choose Surfers Paradise instead for nightlife, energy and the cheapest rooms, or Burleigh Heads for a laid-back, foodie, boutique stay. All three are linked by the G:link tram.
Broadbeach is calmer, has better dining and a less crowded beach, and is more family-friendly; Surfers Paradise is cheaper, busier, and the centre of Gold Coast nightlife. Many visitors base in Broadbeach and tram up to Surfers (8 minutes, 50 cents) for a night out. See our full Broadbeach vs Surfers Paradise comparison for the detail.
Burleigh Heads wins on cafe culture (James Street), natural beauty and surf, but has limited, often pricier accommodation. Broadbeach has far more accommodation choice across all budgets, the best dining range, and a central location. Foodies and couples after a boutique stay lean Burleigh; most other travellers are better served basing in Broadbeach and day-tripping south.
Yes - and it’s the smart play. Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise and Burleigh Heads are all on or near the G:link tram with flat 50-cent fares, 8 to 20 minutes apart. Basing in central Broadbeach gives you the easiest reach to both, so you can sleep somewhere calm and quality and still dip into Surfers’ nightlife or Burleigh’s cafes.
